Ampyra Side Effects
Insomnia, dizziness, and headaches were some of the most common side effects reported during clinical studies with Ampyra. Other common reactions included constipation, indigestion, and back pain. While most side effects of this drug are mild, you should seek prompt medical attention if you experience seizures, difficulty breathing, or other serious problems.
An Introduction to Ampyra Side EffectsAs with any medicine, Ampyra™ (dalfampridine) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in many cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of AmpyraAmpyra has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received the real medication, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other medication.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Ampyra included:
- Urinary tract infection (UTI), such as a bladder infection -- in up to 12 percent of people
- Insomnia -- up to 9 percent
- Dizziness -- up to 7 percent
- Headache -- up to 7 percent.
Other common side effects (occurring in 2 to 5 percent of people) included:
- Back pain
- Balance problems
- Relapse of multiple sclerosis
- Irritated nose and throat
- Indigestion or heartburn
- Throat pain
- Unusual sensations, such as tingling, pricking, or numbness.
