Avonex® is a medication that is commonly used for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. It is believed to work by limiting the immune system from attacking and destroying the protective coating around nerve fibers.
The drug is available by prescription and is injected into a muscle once weekly. Side effects that have been reported with this product include pain, fever, chills, and flu-like symptoms.
Avonex is not for everyone; before starting treatment, let your healthcare provider know if you have any other medical conditions, such as liver disease, chest pain, epilepsy, or depression. Also, tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or thinking of becoming pregnant.
