Dantrium Dosage

Your individual Dantrium dosage will depend on whether you are taking the capsules or receiving the injections, the reason you are using this drug, and other factors. The capsules are usually taken three to four times a day. The injection is given into a vein either as an intravenous infusion or a push. This medicine is used to treat muscle spasticity and malignant hyperthermia.

An Introduction to Dosing With Dantrium

The dose of Dantrium® (dantrolene sodium) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Whether you are taking the medicine by mouth or receiving it as an injection
  • Why you are using the medicine
  • Your age
  • Your weight
  • How you respond to Dantrium.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

What Is the Recommended Dantrium Dosage for Chronic Spasticity?

The standard initial Dantrium dosage for relieving muscle spasms and stiffness in adults is 25 mg once a day for seven days, followed by 25 mg three times a day. Your healthcare provider may increase your amount, if needed, to control your symptoms by increasing your dose first to 50 mg three times a day for seven days and then, if necessary, to 100 mg three times a day.

The standard initial dosage for relieving muscle spasms and stiffness in children is 0.5 mg per kg body weight (about 0.23 mg per lb) once a day for seven days, followed by 0.5 mg per kg three times a day. Your child's healthcare provider may further increase your child's dose, if needed, to control symptoms by first increasing the amount to 1 mg per kg (about 0.45 mg per lb) three times a day for seven days and then, if necessary, to 2 mg per kg (about 0.91 mg per lb) three times a day.

Each dose should be tried for at least seven days before the amount is further increased. This is because it may take seven days to see a complete response. If a response is not observed, the amount should be lowered to the previous dose that was effective.

Some people may need higher Dantrium doses than those listed here, or may need to take the medicine four times a day. The maximum recommended amount is 100 mg four times a day.
