Multiple Sclerosis and Novantrone

Adults who have multiple sclerosis may receive Novantrone® (mitoxantrone). Specifically, this prescription drug is approved reduce disability and the frequency of relapses in people with secondary-progressive, progressive-relapsing, or relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). It is not approved for use in people with primary-progressive forms of MS.

Novantrone works by damaging DNA, preventing certain cells from multiplying and dividing correctly. It also prevents B-cells, T-cells, and macrophages from rapidly multiplying. These cells are thought to be involved in the immune response that causes the attack on myelin in people with MS.
