Novantrone Dosage

Novantrone Dose for Acute Nonlymphocytic Leukemia

The usual recommended dosage of Novantrone for treating acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) is based on body surface area, which is usually calculated using your height and weight. Treatment is generally divided into two phases, called "induction" and "consolidation."

The goal of induction therapy is to kill the leukemia cells and put the disease into remission. The usual recommended Novantrone dose for induction is 12 mg per m3 once a day for three days in a row. If needed, a second induction course may be given. The recommended amount for the second induction course is 12 mg per m3 once a day for two days in a row.

The purpose of consolidation therapy is to kill any remaining leukemia cells that may not be active but that could begin to regrow and cause a relapse. The usual recommended dosage of Novantrone for consolidation therapy is 12 mg per m3 once a day for two days in a row, starting about six weeks after induction therapy. This amount may be repeated four weeks later.

When used to treat ANLL, Novantrone is normally given in combination with another leukemia medication called cytarabine (Depocyt®). Cytarabine is usually given for more days than Novantrone.

General Information on Using Novantrone

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Novantrone include the following:

  • Novantrone comes in the form of a liquid that is given as an injection into a vein (an intravenous, or IV, injection). The dose is usually given over a period of 5 to 15 minutes.

  • How often you receive the medicine will depend on the reason you are using it. Your healthcare provider will tell you how often it will be given.

  • Novantrone is normally administered by a trained healthcare provider in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital or clinic.

  • Let your healthcare provider or nurse know right away if you experience any skin problems at the site of your injection, such as pain, redness, swelling, or burning.

  • Novantrone can irritate the skin. If the medicine gets on your skin, rinse the area well with warm water.

  • If you use this medicine for MS, you will need certain blood tests prior to each dose. This is to make sure it is safe for you to continue treatment.

  • For Novantrone to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to dosing with Novantrone, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
