Novantrone Dosage

Novantrone is a medication prescribed to treat multiple sclerosis and certain types of cancer. The recommended dosage will be different for each person, based on his or her height and weight, the reason for using it, and their response to it. This drug comes as a liquid that is injected into a vein (intravenous, or IV, injection) over a period of 5 to 15 minutes.

An Introduction to Dosing With Novantrone

The dose of Novantrone® (mitoxantrone) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your height and weight
  • The reason you are using it
  • How you respond to and tolerate the drug.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

What Is the Recommended Novantrone Dosage for Multiple Sclerosis?

The usual recommended Novantrone dose for treating multiple sclerosis (MS) is based on body surface area, which is usually calculated using your height and weight. More specifically, the recommended dose is 12 mg per m3, given once every three months.

Your healthcare provider will do certain tests before each dose to check your heart, liver, and blood cell counts. If you are a woman of childbearing potential, you will also need to have a pregnancy test before receiving Novantrone.

You should receive no more than a total of 140 mg per m3 of this medicine during your entire lifetime. Higher total lifetime doses increase the risk for heart failure.

Novantrone Dosing in Hormone-Refractory Prostate Cancer

The usual recommended Novantrone dosage for treating people with hormone-refractory prostate cancer is based on body surface area, which is usually calculated using your height and weight. More specifically, the recommended amount is 12 to 14 mg per m3, given every 21 days (every three weeks).
