Generic Tecfidera

Because certain exclusivity rights are in place until March 2018 for Tecfidera (dimethyl fumarate), companies are not allowed to make a generic version of this drug at this time. However, after these rights expire, a generic Tecfidera product may become available. Certain circumstances could come up, such as lawsuits or patents for new uses, that could delay generic availability.

Can I Buy Generic Tecfidera?

Tecfidera™ (dimethyl fumarate) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). It is considered an immunomodulator (also called an immune-modulating medicine).

Tecfidera is made by Biogen Idec, Inc. It is protected from generic competition by exclusivity rights that have yet to expire.

When Will Generic Tecfidera Be Available?

Biogen Idec holds the exclusive rights to market Tecfidera in the United States until March 2018. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or patents for new Tecfidera uses. Once the exclusivity rights expire, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Tecfidera drug.

Is Dimethyl Fumarate a Generic Tecfidera?

No -- dimethyl fumarate is the active ingredient in Tecfidera, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.

In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
