How Does BG-12 Work?

Healthcare providers may prescribe Tecfidera™ (dimethyl fumarate) to treat certain types of multiple sclerosis in adults. This drug was formerly known as BG-12 and is used to help reduce symptoms of this condition. But how does it work?

It is currently unknown exactly how Tecfidera works to treat symptoms of multiple sclerosis. However, it is thought to work in a couple of ways. The drug is believed to activate a certain protein in the body that protects cells from damage caused by harmful chemicals produced during many normal body functions. It may also have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help minimize damage.
