Tizanidine hydrochloride (
Zanaflex®) is a drug used for the short-term treatment of muscle spasms and other symptoms of spasticity, such as muscle cramps and tightness. Available as capsules or tablets, the medicine is taken up to three times a day, and each dose lasts between three and six hours. This product works centrally in the body (in the spinal cord or brain), not directly on the muscles.
Most people have no problems when taking tizanidine, but side effects are possible. Some of the more common side effects reported with this medication include dry mouth, weakness, and drowsiness.
